We are happy to be able to offer for your consideration an ANTIQUE French Hand carved baby cradle from the 1800s.
The amazing thing about this handcarved cradle is it is still in very good working order. Nails were not used to put this together but rather pegs. This dates it to the early 1800s or even late 1700s. It has been extremely well cared for. Most likely originally there was a sling attached to the inside and it did not need a solid bottom. The only change to this bed is that someone added two shelves that can be added to make it a book shelf.
I love seeing all the hand carving marks along the spindles and the signs of all the handwork done to this crib. You can tell it was made with a lot of love and patience. It certainly is sturdy enough to be, still usable. It is rocking cradle and quite long so that they could hold even an older child. I would suggest re-lining it with fabric because the bars are a bit spread apart by today’s standards. 17”wide 16” tall 37” long.
This is an exceptional piece and will not disappoint. It is not just primitive it is also beautiful. The French know how to work Beauty into the simple things of life.
