    Notable Features:
This necklace was handmade in the Retro era. The necklace consists of ruby beads and a beautiful yellow gold teardrop pendant. The use of so many unique and beautiful stones in this necklace is an excellent homage to the Hollywood Regency style, which rose to popularity during the Retro period. Eager to show off their wealth and style, Hollywood celebrities and socialites during this time would adorn themselves with glamorous jewelry, usually featuring large and beautiful stones. The necklace was made in the style of Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, and Tiffany designs that were influencing the Hollywood Regency style, making the viewer think of the likes of Ava Gardner and Katharine Hepburn. Markings on the necklace indicate it was created in Mexico by Imperial Gold Co.
The necklace was made in the Mughal style and features forty-four ruby beads, which are red in hue. Ten of the ruby beads have an 18k gold filigree bead cap. The warm hue of the gold enhances the beauty of the ruby red hues. Each bead is off-round and displays a stunning lighter red hue as light moves across the faces of the stones. After being drilled through the middle and polished, the beads were strung by hand on a wire and linked to each other with small golden hoop links.
The necklace has a beautiful 22k gold teardrop pendant with an impressive weight valve of 5.00. The pendant has been drilled through the middle and wired for secure wear. At the top and bottom of the pendant is beautiful filigree beadwork; all the beads have been bound together to form a flower shape.
The necklace is completed with a 14k yellow gold heart-shaped lobster clasp. When worn, this necklace rests just above the collarbone against the décolletage on most people. A classic of Hollywood Regency jewelry from the Retro period, this necklace would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history.
    Damage:
Age appropriate wear. There are some minor surface scratches on the gold pendant.

    The History
Retro jewelry refers to pieces created in the 1940s and 1950s. This was a period during which jewelry designers were largely influenced by the changes stemming from World War II. These designs reflect an infusion of futuristic vision with elements inspired by preceding periods, encompassing a variety of gemstones, shapes, and materials. Materials used commonly in Retro jewelry are gold, gold alloys, and silver as the wartime put a restriction on the use of platinum. Designs can be masculine, geometric and modern, or softer, more feminine and floral.
The Hollywood Regency style came into fashion during the 1930s, ushered along by the Golden Age of Hollywood. This style was heralded by bright, contrasting colors and modernization of the opulence of Baroque styles, featuring a deliberately frivolous extravagance that screamed glitz and glamour. “Big girls need big diamonds” was taken to heart, and the gorgeous Hollywood stars decked themselves ap
propriately, with blindingly glittering jewels to showcase their lives of luxury.
Mughal jewelry emerged in India during the Mughal dynasty, beginning in the 16th century. Jewelry was an important symbol indicating a person’s status in society. The elite wore highly ornate and massively jeweled pieces. As the Mughal empire conquered the majority of India, the Mughal style spread to many other regions, being incorporated into many Indian cultures. Pieces usually display intricate designs, massive amounts of gemstones, and elaborate enameling.
Filigree metalworking is a delicate form of art and has been found as early as 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia. It was perfected by the Phoenicians and Etruscan civilizations between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. It involves stamping out a design in metal and hand bending and twirling threads, combined with tiny beads, until a final motif emerges. It is reminiscent of lace and considered one of the most difficult metalworking processes. Filigree is still a very popular technique in India and Asia.
