About the Parthenon temple and its history
Ictinos and Kallikratis, under Phideas’ supervision, were the creators of Pathenon. Phideas created as well the famous, enormous gold and ivory sculpture of Athena, goddess-protector of the city of Athens, to which the temple was dedicated.
The building incorporates a number of aesthetic innovative applications, so that it appears as perfect as possible to the eyes. It is a Doric temple that incorporates certain Ionic features, to give a well-balanced result.
Parthenon has been built in 15 years (447-432 BC), on the Acropolis hill, after Pericles’ request and personal direction, to replace the old Athena temple that had been destroyed by the Persians. Pericles wanted a temple that would make a statement to the world about the superiority of Athens and the triumph of civilization over barbarism. Thus, only the best materials have been chosen for its construction.
