    Description

    Rail Spike
Brookdale Mine, Phoenixville, Schuylkill Twp., Chester Co., Pennsylvania, USA
Found by Ronald Kendig, late 1990’s
    Measures
    6.0 x 1.6 x 1.4 cm
    2 3/8” x 5/8” x 11/16”
    Here is an old
    Rail Spike
from the Brookdale Mine in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. This crusty brown and black spike weighs 1.1 ounces and was originally in the mine and used as a spike in the track for the ore carts. A Rail Spike is a large (oversized) nail that was used to secure
    rails
    and base plates to
    railroad
ties along the track in the mine. Spikes commonly used for railroads have an offset head. Naturally, due to the age of this spike, all surfaces have some corrosion (the crusty look).
I found this spike myself on one of our many family collecting trips to the Brookdale Mine dumps in the late 1990’s. The day before we went collecting there, the dumps were turned over for a club collecting trip. The heavy equipment broke into one of the mine adits and water gushed out everywhere~! The entire dump area was flooded. You can imagine my surprise when I found it. This spike was in the old mine for over 140 years~!!
The Brookdale Mine is a part of the Phoenixville mining district. Operations started October 1852 and ceased around 1865; this mine has been closed for years. Phoenixville is located northwest of Philadelphia and the dumps were a favorite collecting site for decades. If you are interested in historical mining memorabilia, this is indeed a rare find~!
Included in this sale is this exact vintage Pennsylvania Nail Spike and our yellow Nature’s Window label that lists the item, location it is from and pedigree (Ex. Ronald Kendig).

    General Information about Our Items
**Each sale contains just one of the many interesting items we have for sale from several collections or from our Nature’s Window inventory. **We hand-select items that we think might be of interest to eBay buyers. **We will specify when we think cleaning will enhance an item or if care is needed in handling.
    Labels
